Hi, I’m Ivan. I’m interviewing for⁰ the position of chief engineer.

Hello Ivan, nice to meet you. Would you like a tea or a coffee?

No thanks, I’m good¹.

How about² you tell us a bit about yourself to get started.

Well, I’m Russian and I currently live in St. Petersburg.

And you flew all the way to California today for the interview?

Yes, I’m still a bit jet-lagged³ actually.

What do you like about living in Russia?

Well, I like living in St. Petersburg specifically⁴, because it’s an incredibly⁵ beautiful city and has tons of fascinating⁶ places that are worth⁷ checking out⁸.

Where do you work currently, and what is your position?

I’m an engineer for Yandex on the core infrastructure team.

Are you a software or hardware⁹ engineer?

I’m first and foremost¹⁰ a software engineer, but I do find myself working with hardware on occasion.

Do you find your job challenging¹¹?

No, it’s pretty straightforward¹². I’ve been doing it for quite a while.

What does it involve?

Basically¹³ I manage our servers, ensuring that they scale appropriately when our traffic increases.

Have you faced any difficult situations in the course of your present job?

There was this one time¹⁴ where our servers were under attack by hackers, and our entire system nearly crashed¹⁵. We managed to keep it up and running¹⁶ though.

What do you find frustrating¹⁷ about your present job?

The company I work for uses PCs mainly, and I much prefer Macs¹⁸ personally.

What would you say are some of your key strengths?

I’m quite consistent¹⁹ in the quality of my work. I try to write code that is both efficient²⁰ and bug free²¹. I’m conscientious²², courteous²³, and fully appreciate²⁴ the importance of having a methodical approach to problem solving.

Why do you want to work for us?

I’ve been feeling like a change of scenery²⁵. Your company has an impressive²⁶ track record²⁷ of innovation and I like being involved in cutting-edge²⁸ research & development²⁹.

What sorts of things do you enjoy doing outside of work³⁰?

Well, I read a lot. Mostly non-fiction. I’m a fan of³¹ books on history but occasionally I read sci-fi³² novels. The last book I read was “The Martian”.

Oh I’ve read that too. How did you find it³³?

Underwhelming³⁴ actually, I had higher expectations.

Are you married Ivan?

I’m sorry, but is that question relevant³⁵ to me working for you?

Well, if you get the job you’ll need to move to California, and if you have a family, then they’ll need to be resettled here.

I see. No I’m not married and I don’t have any children, but I do have a long term³⁶ girlfriend. We’re prepared to have a long distance relationship³⁷ for a while.

Do you have any questions for us?

Yes, I was wondering whether I’ll be allowed to take days off work for personal reasons?

You get 2 sick days³⁸ per month, but you can use them however you like. Anything else you’d like to know?

No, I think that’s about it³⁹.
